Course Summary

The GWO-approved BST Working At Heights Refresher course is a 1 day course which must be undertaken by individuals who will be traveling to both on and offshore Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) This BST Module validates the participants Working At Heights training for 2 years.
Due to the physical demands on the course, it is the responsibility of the employer and participant to pre-determine the participant’s ability to safety attend the course.

Learning Outcomes

BASIC SAFETY TRAINING – WORKING AT HEIGHTS REFRESHER

Assessment Method: Direct Observation/Oral Questioning (as appropriate)

  1. Demonstrate performing pre-use inspection of full body harness.
  2. Demonstrate identifying standards markings and inspection dates on a full body harness.
  3. Practice and demonstrate fitting and adjusting a harness.
  4. Demonstrate performing a pre-use inspection of a random fall/travel restraint lanyard and work positioning lanyard.
  5. Identify and select certified and structural anchor points for attachments of fall/travel restraint lanyards and work positioning lanyards.
  6. Demonstrate attaching fall/travel restraint lanyards and work positioning lanyards.
  7. Demonstrate performing pre-use inspection of guided type fall arrest products chosen for this module (a-m in standard).
  8. Demonstrate performing a pre-use inspection of a random vertical fall arrest system with matching fall arrest glider/slider.
  9. Demonstrate attaching/detaching a random glider/slider to the rail/wire of a matching vertical fall arrest system.
  10. Demonstrate using a random vertical fall arrest system with FIRST performing a hang-test/load test.
  11. Demonstrate performing a pre-use inspection of a random fall arrest lanyard.
  12. Demonstrate attaching fall arrest lanyards to the harness.
  13. During subsequent practical training, value and apply the principle of selecting anchor points which will reduce fall factors ALARP.
  14. Demonstrate using single and/or twin fall arrest lanyards.
  15. Demonstrate using twin and/or single fall arrest lanyards while double hook climbing with correct distance between anchor points.
  16. Explain importance of always using fall arrest systems.
  17. Demonstrate reducing the risk of dropped objects during exercises.
  18. Demonstrate staying out of the drop zone of working at height during exercises.
  19. Demonstrate attaching a backup line to their harness.
  20. Warm-up major muscle groups prior to each practical.
  21. Perform pre-use inspection of their personal fall protection equipment.
  22. Perform a “Buddy Check” of another participant’s personal fall protection equipment.
  23. Practice and demonstrate using vertical fall arrest systems.
  24. Practice and demonstrate using fall restraint lanyards and work positioning lanyards to prevent a fall.
  25. Practice and demonstrate using fall arrest lanyards, double hook climbing included.
  26. Practice and demonstrate applying the skills from the BST WAH course in a wind turbine-like environment.
  27. Discuss and explain multiple perspectives acquired through group discussions.
  28. Demonstrate performing passive and active mode setup evacuation from height using full PPE and a random evacuation device.
  29. Demonstrate disconnecting the device after reaching the ground level.
  30. Demonstrate using techniques like attaching equipment to their harness to reduce the risk of dropped objects.
  31. Perform a pre-use inspection of their personal fall protection equipment.
  32. Perform a “buddy check” of another participant’s personal fall protection equipment.
  33. Demonstrate using the evac/rescue devices including pre-use inspection, anchor points, and proper behavior on ladder with PPE.
  34. Demonstrate using a rescue device:
    1. Rescue conscious casualty hanging by guided type vertical fall arrester, secured by their work positioning lanyard (inside of ladder) with rescue equipment in passive setup, preferably utilizing a roper clamp for rescue.
    2. Rescue unconscious casualty hanging by a fall arrest lanyard (inside of ladder) with rescue equipment in an active setup.
    3. Rescue conscious casualty secured by work positioning lanyard attached to front attachment of harness (from outside the ladder)
